Scary Creatures For Halloween

Since Halloween is one of the most celebrated festivals of the season, it is no wonder that people really go the extra mile to make the most out of it through parties, creepy decorations, and of course, scary costumes. With barely a week to go before Halloween, party-deprived individuals and party animals alike must be raving about the many costume events leading up to October 31. Which costume to wear ---sexy, Hollywood inspired, etc---is another factor that compounds people's Halloween jitters.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

Don't let the costume situation get to you. There are many costume ideas to choose from if you really want to be the talk of the town during this season of fright. You can let the true you come out by dressing up as a fictional character, sexy vixen, or a Hollywood pop princess. But then again, if you really want to stay true to the spirit of Halloween, you can never go wrong with scary creatures.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

Scary creatures never get out of style during Halloween. No matter how many new concepts and Halloween costume ideas come out, they often turn out to be just a phase that would soon be overshadowed by scary creatures for Halloween. These Halloween strange creatures are just like your favorite pair of jeans---they never run out of style.

Scary creatures for Halloween enthusiasts are always in. If you want to really look the part, scary creatures for Halloween range from the paranormal to the creepiest and most nightmarish. Here are just some of the top scary creatures that you could use as inspiration for your costume.

Doppelgangers

Doppelgangers are ghostly and evil creatures that can shapeshift into an image of a living person. The word "doppelgänger" is of German origin which literally means "double goer". It is a word that often describes the phenomenon whereby someone catches a glimpse of his own image out of the corner of his eyes. In some traditions, it is considered as an omen or an apparition of an unfortunate event that's bound to happen.

Gargoyles

Often depicted as scary creatures with wings and demonic features, gargoyles are entities that are believed to protect buildings from evil spirits.

Manticores

Manticores are feared man-eating creatures that have a body of a lion, a tail of poisonous spines, and according to some sightings, a face that resembles a human's. With its tail of spines, and triple rows of teeth, a manticore is a stealth killer that can swallow its victims whole without leaving any trace.

Nagas and Naginis

These are serpent-like creatures that resemble human from the waist up, and snakes from the waist down. The males are known as Nagas while females are known as Naginis. They are limbless and often depicted as cobra-like in movement.

Wendigo

Wendigo, "the spirit of lonely places" is a cannibalistic spirit that can possess humans. Wendigos are thought to possess evil men. It is said that one can turn into a Wendigo through indulging in cannibalism. It is depicted as a tall thin creature that resembles a human being. It is also portrayed as someone twisted, fanged and bloodstained.

Scary creatures for Halloween are a great costume idea. Dressing up as one of these nightmarish creatures would not only pronounce the spirit of Halloween, but would also earn you some screams of fright, awe and gratification this thriller season.

Halloween - Blown Way Out Of Proportion?

Halloween. Boy, this is one weird holiday. You don't get a day off, nobody really takes it seriously and while it can be one of the most fun days of the year when it comes to showing off your costume, in many parts of the world it's too cold to go out in the street without a jacket. So what's the point? And yet, with all the silliness of this holiday and how meaningless it really is, Halloween has gotten a bad rap and it's getting worse every day. The question we need to ask is this. Is this negativity about Halloween blown way out of proportion or is there really a need to be concerned? Well, we're going to try to provide a logical argument to show that the concern over Halloween is blown way out of proportion.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

The beef with Halloween is basically this. It turns kids into devil worshipers and worse. The question we need to ask is if it's true. In order to answer this question we're going to use a math principal where what we do is prove something else is or isn't true and then if we can prove that, then we assume that the other theory is also true or not true. If you're confused, don't worry, you won't be for long.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

Let's look at the issue of violence on TV. The general theory is that violence on TV turns kids into violent kids. Well, studies have been done and those studies show that kids in homes where there is a solid mother and father figure are no more likely to become violent from watching violent TV than kids in homes where violent TV is not allowed.

Let's look at another statistic. This one has to do with kids having sex. The theory is that if a kid is allowed to watch TV where sex is openly displayed, that kid is more likely to have sex than in a home where kids are not allowed to watch shows with sex. Well, studies show that kids who, again, live in homes with a strong mother and father figure and watch shows that have sex, do not have any more sex than a kid in a home where sex on TV is not allowed to be viewed.

We could go on and on but you've probably gotten the point by now. The truth is, Halloween, even though it does depict monsters, witches, devils and the like, isn't a certain magnet for kids to turn to the dark side. A lot of how these kids end up, if not a good portion, has to do with their upbringing. If a kid has two good parents who teach the kid right from wrong, then putting on a costume and going out to play trick or treat isn't going to turn the kid into a witch or devil worshiper.

In spite of this, the war will go on. People will continue to try to keep Halloween out of schools, churches, businesses and wherever they can. Maybe someday people will realize that it's just a silly holiday

How to Throw a Hit Halloween Party

Halloween is one of the only holidays in our society when just about anything goes, so what better way to celebrate this fun and freaky day than with a Halloween party? It seems like there's always someone you know throwing a Halloween party; people are planning what they're going to do on this howling holiday earlier and earlier every year - even as early as summer or Labor Day! But what makes a Halloween party truly unforgettable? Read on to learn how to throw a hit Halloween party.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

Proof is in the Planning

Scariest Halloween Decorations

To have a really successful Halloween party, you must do two things; the first is to plan well in advance. Because so many people are always throwing these parties each year, it's important that you plan your party far enough in advance that everyone will pick yours to go to.

When choosing the date for your party, choose carefully; your event doesn't have to take place on Halloween night - the weekend before is fine (especially if the holiday falls on a random Monday or other weekday - but if you decide that "All Hallows' Eve" is the only acceptable day to have your grand fiesta, make sure it ends early enough for guests who have to go to work or school the next day, and starts late enough that your guests can still celebrate with their kids earlier in the evening (unless it's a children's party).

Choosing a Theme

The second thing you absolutely must do when planning a Halloween party is to pick a theme. Sure, you could just tell everyone it's a party and hope everyone shows up in a costume, but themed parties ensure everyone's ready to have fun! Picking an original theme for your party makes for more unique and off-the-wall costumes, and gives guests something in common besides knowing the host.

The theme of your party should say something about you as the host, so pick something that you yourself would really love to attend. Themes can be based on a favorite scary movie, a popular song ("Everyone come to our Monster Mash!"), or historical event ("Everyone dress in an 80s themed costume!"). Does someone in your family have a birthday in the month of October? Why not have a combination Halloween and birthday celebration? There really is no limit to the crazy, original and creative themes you can come up with!

Halloween Invitations

Once you have picked the date and theme, it's time to send out your Halloween invitations. If you want your guests to wear special costumes according the theme of your party, it's best to send out your party invitations at least six to eight weeks in advance to give everybody enough time to get their costumes together. This holiday has gotten so extremely popular, that there is a huge assortment of Halloween invitations now available.

Halloween invitations that are fiendishly frightening will draw unsuspecting guests to your haunted house for an evening of fun. You can also find Halloween invitations featuring creatures up to no good and naughty witches who frolic the night away, suave vampires in tuxedos, vampire martini invitations, grave robber Halloween invitations, elegant skeleton party invitations, marvelous eyeball martini invites, Frankenstein Halloween invitations, mummy invitations, scary Halloween invitations, jack-o-lanterns, green witches, sexy witches, dancing skeletons and more. Vampires are especially popular this year, and there are plenty of vampire invitations to fit any sort of "Twilight" or "True Blood" themed party you can think of.

Make sure you include that guests need to RSVP by a date on your invitations so you can keep a handle on your expenses by knowing how many guests are coming. This is also essential if you will be giving out goodie bags or will be having a costume contest and don't want to start until everyone has shown up. Don't write "regrets only" on your invitations if you need a really accurate head count.

Freaky Food and Daunting Decorations

The next and final step is to choose appropriately themed refreshments and decorations. To help keep your budget under control, start your party later in the evening, so your guests have time to eat dinner before they come to your party. You can then serve drinks and "finger" foods or have guests bring their scariest food concoction to share. Fill a plastic brain mold with a pink or green dip for the ultimate gross-out snack or put a frozen hand mold in your punch bowl to give guests a scare.

Ask friends if they have any decorations that you can borrow for your party; you'd be surprised at what some people have stored away in their basements and garages. You can also find many decorations and great deals on food and drinks at the dollar store and other discount stores.

Turn your home into a haunted house by putting old yellowed sheets on the furniture and replace the light bulbs in the party room with black lights or red or orange light bulbs. Completely black out windows with trash bags or blankets, and create a foggy atmosphere with dry ice and water. Place spider webbing, plastic spiders, rats and other creepy crawlies in corners, hanging from the ceiling and across the tops of doorways to finish the look.

Just follow these simple steps, and ghosts, goblins, witches and warlocks alike will all flock to your haunted house to party the night away.

Celebrating Halloween - Tips and Tricks for a Fun and not so Scary Event!

Halloween isn't just for kids anymore. In fact it seems that more and more adults - young and old - and especially singles, are celebrating this holiday. It's a great opportunity to meet new friends and a possible date while disguised! So for a truly awesome, no not gruesome, Halloween get-together, follow the tips and tricks here.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

Set the mood! Yes, you do need to decorate for the season. And like most other major holidays, a tree is in order, only this one is more twiggy, and black in appearance, and bedecked and festooned with spider webs, (yes, you can used the left over Christmas angel hair), ghostly goblins, pumpkin ornaments, and howling witches. There is a large assortment of Halloween ornaments readily available and you can always make your own. Just check in with Pier 1 Imports, Bed Bath and Beyond, Linen's and Things, Seasonal Concepts, and even your local Hallmark Store. Beyond the Halloween Tree, you'll want to consider adding some festive lights (ghosts and pumpkins are most popular) to an outside railing or surrounding the door, you can even run these up a stair rail inside and around windows. You aren't going for elegant, this is Halloween.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

Okay, so you've got the tree planned, the lights ready, now add a Halloween wreath to the door or better yet, a favorite skeleton that glows in the dark to really add some spook. Certainly strategically placed webs with large black spiders are effective, and it isn't complete without jack o lanterns lining the walkway and greeting visitors at the door. Make it interactive, and ask everyone to bring a carved pumpkin, you can supply the candles. It is a great ice breaker, and you can always come up with a prize for the scariest, most creative, most recognizeable, biggest and more.

Of course, you will need invitations, and in this high tech age, it's a lot more fun and unusual to get an invite by snail mail with a follow up by email, rather than just another evite. Why not include a set of pumpkin seeds and roasting instructions. You can either provide the food, or do it pot luck style, but make it easy and ask for specific types of dishes.

Not interested in sponsoring a pumpkin carving contest? How about a mask decorating soiree and you provide the goodies and masks to decorate with (order in bulk from an online party source.) You could even include a cape decorating festivity, ordering a dozen or more from a local party supply store. You could ask guests to bring a Halloween ornament for the tree. It's important to make this interactive and a good way to mingle. Be sure to award favors and prizes liberally, so everyone goes home a winner.

How To Make Cheap Halloween Costumes

Halloween is a time for celebration. It is at that point in the year where the nights are drawing in and it is becoming colder. This festival marks the coming of winter. It can be expensive to dress up, so why not make some cheap Halloween costumes.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

The classic costume is of course the ghost. What better use could there be for that old white sheet. It is quick and easy to make and does not need any special sewing skills. All you need is the sheet, a pair of scissors, a marker pen and some safety pins.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

In addition it would help if the child was wearing white clothes underneath and had white gloves and shoes. You just need to drape the sheet over the child's head and mark out a hem. It should not drape on the ground in case the child falls over it, but should easily clear the ground.

Then mark where their arms come to so that it can be cut so that they can move their arms easily. Very carefully mark where their eyes are. Take off the sheet and cut where you have marked. You should allow quite large eye holes so that they are not in any danger of not being able to see, and a bit of black make up around the eyes would add nicely to the effect.

You may want to use some safety pins to hold it all together. Once they are dressed in white and have their sheet in place then they will look like a very traditional ghost. This will have cost pennies to make.

There are lots of great costumes that can easily be made with a very small amount of effort. Start off with an easy one, then let your imagination run riot. Your kids will soon be the scariest on the block. Cheap Halloween costumes can be fun for the whole family to make.

Haunted Castles in America

There are several haunted castles in America. Most everyone is attracted to castles. These immense structures are typically constructed in such a way that they naturally appeal to anyone who lays eyes on them. In addition to this, they usually stem from a long, rich history that is filled with intrigue and mystery. This is especially true when it comes to the haunted castles that are located throughout the United States of America. In this guide, you will be introduced to several of the many haunted castles in America.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

The Preston Castle

Scariest Halloween Decorations

The Preston Castle is located in the city of Ione, in California. In the year of 1890, the construction on this majestic building started. It was created to reflect the architectural style which is commonly referred to as "Romanesque Revival". Originally, this was referred to as the "Preston School of Industry". At the time in which the building was created, the community saw a need to have a place where juvenile offenders to the law could be placed, with the purpose and intent of rehabilitation. Construction completed in the year of 1894. It was at this time that the first young offenders entered the doors of the immense structure for the first time.

When it comes to schools that aim to reform, the Preston Castle is one of the most well known in all of America. It was considered to be the very first of its type at the time. As a matter of fact, when it opened, electricity was not even present. This luxury came a year later through the means of a massive water wheel that was used to produce minimal, but substantive lighting to the residents of the facility. As time progressed, the faculty and staff who operated the structure determined that it was time to move from the castle itself as it had started to deteriorate tremendously. This occurred around the year of 1960.

Throughout the years, several different types of hauntings have been said to have occurred at this castle. In one instance, there is a special type of cemetery that was created in an effort to hold those who passed away while living in the Preston Castle. While this cemetery is said to only house approximately twenty three individual graves, many claim that there are spirits lingering in this area of the grounds. Individuals who have visited this area often sense areas of intense coldness. In addition to this, several have felt strong, uncomfortable emotions on the grounds.

There are several strange and unusual events that seem to occur in this haunted castle in America. Events such as strange noises, unusual smells, voices, intense emotional states, and even full body apparitions have been spotted in this haunted American castle. While it appears that most hauntings seem to be residual based, it is also believed that many of the spirits that linger on the grounds and within the walls of the structure are intelligent, making this one of the scariest places on Earth - especially at night!

Thornwood Castle

The Thornwood Castle is located in Washington, in the city of Lakewood. Today, this structure serves as a popular "Bed and Breakfast", particularly for couples looking for a romantic getaway. Original construction of the immense home began in the year of 1908 and continued until completion in the year of 1911. Most of the unique architecture emerged from England, as the owner, Chester Thorne, wanted to ensure that the home was built to withstand weatherization and time. As time progressed in the history of this home, many who came to know it - both inside and out - have determined that this seems to be a gateway to the spiritual world.

Most individuals who visit this haunted American castle state that there is a sense of peace and calm that seems to generate out of the walls themselves - as if the building is a fortress of spirit and positive life energy. No matter where you go in the structure - there does not seem to be any sort of evil presence that lurks in the castle. Many claimed that they have experienced intelligent hauntings that seem to want to communicate with the living, for one reason or another. Then, there seem to be even angelic presences as accounted by many witnesses that appear to want to protect the building, as well as all those that enter the property and the building itself. If you are seeking to emerge yourself into a place of spiritual life, the haunted Thornwood Castle in Washington is sure to be a place that you will want to be!

The Beardslee Castle

The Beardslee Castle is located in New York in the city of Little Falls. This has been considered to be one of the most haunted castles in America for some time now. Today, you can visit this unique structure easily as it is a restaurant that is open to the public. If you go to the hill that is located in what is referred to as "Mohawk Valley", you will discover this castle, standing in all of its majesty. Constructed in the year of 1860 by the infamous Augustus Beardslee, this building has a long history that contributes to the belief that spirits reside in and around the brick and mortar used to construct it.

There are two very popular hauntings that seem to occur in this haunted American castle. The first is a lady that is dressed in all white. Naturally, she is even called the "lady in white". Then, there is the story of a man who seems to be consumed by shadows lingering in and around the structure on a consistent basis. The identities of these two individuals are not known, but many who have studied the history of the structure are under the impression that these are actual Beardslee family members that linger on even after death in the physical body. Naturally, there are your typical noises, shadows, moving objects, and electrical interference in this particular haunted castle as well!

Conclusion

This is just a sample of the many haunted castles in America today. If you have a fascination with castles, history, and paranormal stories and legends, visiting one of these haunted places to go would be in your best interest! There are several other haunted castles in America today apart from the ones mentioned here, however, these seem to be the most popular among those who are in search of haunted castles that have a long tale when it comes to actual history.

How To Plan A Pirate Birthday Party

Do you have children who love to play pirate and search for buried treasure? Pirate movies have inspired a whole new set of games for children other than video games. Attending a Pirate Birthday Party can be full of adventure, mystery, fun and enjoyed by all ages.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

Both boys and girls will have a good time and enjoy the hunt for buried gold. It's not everyday you get to have a pirate birthday party, so you might as well go for it.

Scariest Halloween Decorations

You will need invitations to invite everyone to the party. The perfect type of invitation would be one that looks like a pirate's map leading to a hidden treasure. The treasure on this map is the location of the Pirate Birthday Party. You can either make your own invitations or purchase ready made birthday party invitations.

Suggest on the invitation that kids and adults "dress up" in pirate attire! Of course, you need to dress in your best pirate gear yourself. Why not have a contest for the best costume?

So, that everyone wins a prize you can have several categories that a costume will fall into. Such as, best, scariest, prettiest, most creative, best home made costume, best ready made costume, the group favorite, you get the idea. With so many categories all the children will be able to win a prize for their costume.

You can probably come up with a few more categories yourself. The idea is to have fun and everyone is a winner that participates and comes in a pirate costume.

Let your guests know that there will be a contest with several categories and to make sure they come in pirate attire.

Decorations For A Pirate Birthday Party

The weather will be the deciding factor of whether you have the birthday party in your backyard or inside. If the weather permits it would be fun to use both the backyard and inside your home. Part of the treasure hunt can be outdoors where there are great places for hiding clues and the treasure.

*You will want to decorate the pirate party area to resemble a pirate's ship or the ship's galley. But first, the mates will need to find the location of the party so, hang a pirate flag or balloons outside to identify your home.

*Put a picture of a skull or pirate on your front door with a sign saying "All Who Enter Here Must Follow The Pirate's Code". Hang floor length streamers of black crepe paper in the entrance door way and over the ceiling.

*Place pirate decals, stickers and posters on the walls.

*Hang a net and add shells, a skull, crossbones and other pirate sea items to the net. Use crepe paper and balloons throughout the room.

*Make a treasure chest from a decorated box or purchase a ready made cardboard treasure chest. Fill the chest with gold and silver tissue paper, gold coins, old costume jewelry and oranges and bananas.

Food For The Shipmates

Try to keep it simple and serve pirate's fare. Drink Captain Hook's rum, a bucket filled with apple juice. Write the menu in pirate's language and see if the children can guess what it is.

Have A Treasure Hunt

When selecting a hiding place for the clues consider the ages of the children and their abilities. You don't want a treasure hunt that is too hard or too easy.

Each clue should be in two parts. The first part will direct the children to a certain location. The second part of the clue will tell them where to look for the message in this location.

Use pictures and the written word when making the clues. The children could collect puzzle pieces at each location along with the next clue.

Divide the children into two groups and assign each team a color. You will make up two sets of clues and place them in color coded envelopes. That way, each team will only take and read the color coded envelope that belongs to them.

Start each team with a different clue. This will avoid the two groups running into each other.

The last clue will take both teams back to the place where they started. Both teams will put the puzzle pieces that they have together into one puzzle. The completed puzzle will have a written message, telling them where the treasure is hidden. The hidden treasure can be anything.

A pirate birthday party with a treasure hunt makes for great, fun and is an easy way to keep children entertained.

The Scariest Hallowe'en Ever

Saturday was the first (and the biggest) costume party of the Halloween season around here. I went as the scariest thing I could think of: the New York Stock Exchange. Sadly, I didn't win the 'Scariest Costume' prize . . . I lost out to a store-bought devil. I'm not sure whether this particular devil was scarier because he was a product of the world economy (probably manufactured in China) or because he was a biblically-inspired manifestation of 'creatures from the id' (as in the 1956 sci-fi/horror film, Forbidden Planet). Either way, as a student of human nature, I found it fascinating that people would be more frightened of a manifestation of their own subconscious mythology than of the reality of losing their financial security for the foreseeable future. As Alice was wont to exclaim: "Curiouser and curiouser!"

Scariest Halloween Decorations

The more I've been able to delve into the deeper regions of the midlife transition to find the motivator that supplies all the necessary psychic energy to power midlife crises in both women and men, I keep coming up with the same inexhaustible and eternally-renewable energy source: fear. Because this primordial fear of losing out (. . . on what? on life? . . . ), most people would rather deal with fantasy horror, like slasher movies and the scare-yourself-silly Stephen King genre than get down there where the real threats to your relationships, your career, and your personal health and well-being lie.

I'm no psychologist (but I am a fairly astute observer), still, I wonder why it's easier for some people (especially men) to deal with the grossest kinds of external threats than it is to sit down and tackle the real fears that are gnawing at your insides. Maybe it's because you know that you can shut your eyes at any time, or walk out of the theater, or turn the TV off if it gets too intense. You can't really do that with the monsters under the bed that have taken up residence in your subconscious mind. Isn't it just like when you were a very little kid? The adults could come in and turn the light on; you could see that the monsters were gone from where you thought they were; and the second the lights went back off and the adult left the room, you'd know it: they're baaaaaack!

Some people say that they love to be scared silly. Are you one of those? Here's a challenge: get quiet; go deep inside; look for what you're most afraid of with your primary relationship; now look again and see if you can find what most scares you about the economy, your career, and your financial condition; finally, go looking for yourself as a really, really old man or woman. BOO! There's scary for you! If you play those videos in your mind, you can't close your eyes, you can't turn it off, you can't walk away, you can't even just turn the lights on. So why not pretend that a costume-shop devil is the scariest thing in your world today?

Mastering the art of the midlife transition means focusing on what's really going on inside you. It means fearlessly bringing all those bogey-men out into the sunlight and taking a serious look at them. It means acknowledging yourself as exactly who you are, where you are, and where you're headed. It means taking responsibility for accepting yourself in your current condition, or for changing things so that your future will be different from your past. Nobody's going to tell you the right thing to do (although very many people are going to try). The training wheels are off, and, regardless of how much good advice you've received, it's time to steer your life on your own. Advice - even advice from acknowledged experts - always has one major drawback, you know: the advice-giver doesn't have to live with the consequences: you do.

It's nearly Hallowe'en, but the scary things that you see out there on the streets can't hurt you. It's the scary things you don't see hiding unacknowledged in the depths of your heart that can get you. It's midlife, and now its time to go after the monsters under your bed. After all, the devil probably won't get you this year . . . but the Dow Jones just might!

How Did Halloween Begin?

It is believed that Halloween originated from a Celtic holiday known as Samhain, which was celebrated in Ireland and Scotland at harvest time for well over a thousand years. Samhain was the time of year (October 31st) when harvesting was completed and animals were brought from summer pastures to shelter for the winter months. At Samhain a large festival was celebrated, and fruits, vegetables, grain, and animals, were burned as gifts to the gods in huge bonfires in hope of a successful new year. It was believed that during the night of Samhain, that the dead could walk among the living, and that the living could ask the dead questions about the future year. Because they believed some of these spirits were evil, they wore costumes with animal heads to scare the spirits and protect themselves.

Christianity spread to the Celtic lands, and in the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV declared November 1st to be All Saints Day, otherwise known as "All Hallow's Day," hallow referring to sainted ones. All Saint's Day was to celebrate the holy saints and martyrs of Christianity. It is generally believed that this was an attempt to Christianize the popular Celtic holiday and diminish the importance of the Celtic ritual and the influence of their spiritual leaders, the druids. This is also how the day became known as All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween. All Soul's Day was similarly added in Christianity a couple hundred years later to celebrate the dead.

Carving out turnips and lighting them goes back hundreds of years with the holiday. An Irish legend tells of a man named Jack who tricks the devil to turn into a coin and keeps him from changing back by placing the coin next to a cross. A year later, Jack dies, but is neither allowed into heaven, or hell, so he must roam the earth. The 1800's brought Halloween to the United States with the Irish immigrants. Pumpkins were carved rather than turnips because they were large and more plentiful.
