Halloween - Blown Way Out Of Proportion?

Halloween. Boy, this is one weird holiday. You don't get a day off, nobody really takes it seriously and while it can be one of the most fun days of the year when it comes to showing off your costume, in many parts of the world it's too cold to go out in the street without a jacket. So what's the point? And yet, with all the silliness of this holiday and how meaningless it really is, Halloween has gotten a bad rap and it's getting worse every day. The question we need to ask is this. Is this negativity about Halloween blown way out of proportion or is there really a need to be concerned? Well, we're going to try to provide a logical argument to show that the concern over Halloween is blown way out of proportion.

The beef with Halloween is basically this. It turns kids into devil worshipers and worse. The question we need to ask is if it's true. In order to answer this question we're going to use a math principal where what we do is prove something else is or isn't true and then if we can prove that, then we assume that the other theory is also true or not true. If you're confused, don't worry, you won't be for long.

Let's look at the issue of violence on TV. The general theory is that violence on TV turns kids into violent kids. Well, studies have been done and those studies show that kids in homes where there is a solid mother and father figure are no more likely to become violent from watching violent TV than kids in homes where violent TV is not allowed.

Let's look at another statistic. This one has to do with kids having sex. The theory is that if a kid is allowed to watch TV where sex is openly displayed, that kid is more likely to have sex than in a home where kids are not allowed to watch shows with sex. Well, studies show that kids who, again, live in homes with a strong mother and father figure and watch shows that have sex, do not have any more sex than a kid in a home where sex on TV is not allowed to be viewed.

We could go on and on but you've probably gotten the point by now. The truth is, Halloween, even though it does depict monsters, witches, devils and the like, isn't a certain magnet for kids to turn to the dark side. A lot of how these kids end up, if not a good portion, has to do with their upbringing. If a kid has two good parents who teach the kid right from wrong, then putting on a costume and going out to play trick or treat isn't going to turn the kid into a witch or devil worshiper.

In spite of this, the war will go on. People will continue to try to keep Halloween out of schools, churches, businesses and wherever they can. Maybe someday people will realize that it's just a silly holiday
