You will need invitations to invite everyone to the party. The perfect type of invitation would be one that looks like a pirate's map leading to a hidden treasure. The treasure on this map is the location of the Pirate Birthday Party. You can either make your own invitations or purchase ready made birthday party invitations.

Suggest on the invitation that kids and adults "dress up" in pirate attire! Of course, you need to dress in your best pirate gear yourself. Why not have a contest for the best costume?

So, that everyone wins a prize you can have several categories that a costume will fall into. Such as, best, scariest, prettiest, most creative, best home made costume, best ready made costume, the group favorite, you get the idea. With so many categories all the children will be able to win a prize for their costume.

You can probably come up with a few more categories yourself. The idea is to have fun and everyone is a winner that participates and comes in a pirate costume.

Let your guests know that there will be a contest with several categories and to make sure they come in pirate attire.

Decorations For A Pirate Birthday Party

The weather will be the deciding factor of whether you have the birthday party in your backyard or inside. If the weather permits it would be fun to use both the backyard and inside your home. Part of the treasure hunt can be outdoors where there are great places for hiding clues and the treasure.

*You will want to decorate the pirate party area to resemble a pirate's ship or the ship's galley. But first, the mates will need to find the location of the party so, hang a pirate flag or balloons outside to identify your home.

*Put a picture of a skull or pirate on your front door with a sign saying "All Who Enter Here Must Follow The Pirate's Code". Hang floor length streamers of black crepe paper in the entrance door way and over the ceiling.

*Place pirate decals, stickers and posters on the walls.

*Hang a net and add shells, a skull, crossbones and other pirate sea items to the net. Use crepe paper and balloons throughout the room.

*Make a treasure chest from a decorated box or purchase a ready made cardboard treasure chest. Fill the chest with gold and silver tissue paper, gold coins, old costume jewelry and oranges and bananas.

Food For The Shipmates

Try to keep it simple and serve pirate's fare. Drink Captain Hook's rum, a bucket filled with apple juice. Write the menu in pirate's language and see if the children can guess what it is.

Have A Treasure Hunt

When selecting a hiding place for the clues consider the ages of the children and their abilities. You don't want a treasure hunt that is too hard or too easy.

Each clue should be in two parts. The first part will direct the children to a certain location. The second part of the clue will tell them where to look for the message in this location.

Use pictures and the written word when making the clues. The children could collect puzzle pieces at each location along with the next clue.

Divide the children into two groups and assign each team a color. You will make up two sets of clues and place them in color coded envelopes. That way, each team will only take and read the color coded envelope that belongs to them.

Start each team with a different clue. This will avoid the two groups running into each other.

The last clue will take both teams back to the place where they started. Both teams will put the puzzle pieces that they have together into one puzzle. The completed puzzle will have a written message, telling them where the treasure is hidden. The hidden treasure can be anything.

A pirate birthday party with a treasure hunt makes for great, fun and is an easy way to keep children entertained.
